Now available to listeners in 80 countries around the world as a CD or digitally, the new album of State Chamber Orchestra “Sinfonietta Rīga” and conductor Normunds Šnē, produced by record company “Skani”, showcases the music of composer Jānis Ivanovs.

"The album includes three compositions of perhaps the greatest Latvian symphonic master: "Simfonieta", Symphony No. 14 ("Sinfonia da camera") and "Poema Luttuoso".

Until now these magnificent works were available only as archival recordings and “Melodija” [Soviet record company] vinyls. I am very happy to make available these excellent works to the world at large,” says the album’s producer Egīls Šēfers.

“This music was fed and inspired by rich, exuberant inner life. This music was created by a highly sensitive and fragile giant. This music reflects on its time thoroughly and without compromise. In it, the voice of inner truth comes before the ease of creation,” notes Normunds Šnē.

In the album’s annotation, composer Imants Zemzaris writes: “Ivanovs always craved an encounter with true real-life drama, and especially when it was reinforced by the shadow of past that usurps the imagination. So was born his Poema luttuoso (1966), poem of pain, dedicated to the memory of Salaspils concentration camp victims. In Symphony No. 14 (Sinfonia da camera, 1971) Ivanovs departs from his typical approach to symphonies – it has only three parts, discarding the customary sonata allegro. For many years, Sinfonia da camera was in the repertoire of Latvian Philharmonic chamber orchestra and its conductor Tovijs Lifšics, becoming the calling card of Latvian contemporary music for audiences from far and near. And what could be said about the three-part Simfonieta (1977), full of vigour and vitality? Of course, it is dedicated to youth and young musicians who today love to join together in friendly ensembles (cameratas) to demonstrate their continually growing proficiency and joy of performance.“

Album “Ivanovs. Symphonies for Strings” has been produced in collaboration with VSIA „Latvijas Koncerti“ and with the financial support of State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia. It is available at the record stores in Latvia and abroad, as well as in digital streaming and download platforms Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Deezer and others.
