Liene Neija-Kalniņa

First violin

Liene Neija-Kalniņa studied violin at Jūrmala Music High School with teacher Dzidra Pelēķe, and in Jānis Bulavs' class at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. She has taken master classes with Yair Kless, Detlef Hahn, Ronald Masin, Rasma Lielmane and others, and has gained success at various competitions on national and international level.

Liene started her career as orchestra musician already at age 13 in Vidzeme Chamber Orchestra. During her studies she gathered experience in Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, Riga Chamber Musicians and Festival Orchestra, Latvian Chamber Orchestra and others. Later she performed with Nordic Symphony Orchestra, Latvian National Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, Kremerata Baltica and other collectives. Since 2004 she plays in the I Violin section at Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, and since 2017 is a member of Sinfonietta Riga chamber orchestra.

Liene enjoys playing chamber music in different ensembles, performing in Latvia as well as abroad. Since 2009 she is also a pedagogue, teaching violin at Jūrmala Music High School.

In her free time she likes to read and see a theatre play or two; and, as soon as she has couple free days in a row, she takes her family to countryside, to “recharge her batteries”.
